We rented
Fame on Blu-Ray today. And I must admit it take me back to when I was a little younger.
I loved the original film when I was a teenager. It made you think of all the possibilities in life, and all the dreams that could come true. It was also just a little naughty to watch. Kids were having sex, doing drugs, smoking and drinking...plus they had all the freedom in the world to run around a city that was amazing. What teenager wouldn't want to watch that? It was kids who had nothing in common with anyone I knew and they lived lives I could never imagine. It may not have been realistic, I wouldn't know, as I have never been a teenager living in NY. But, it sure made me want to visit the flip side.
So, back to the rental...I saw it in the theater this summer (with my 14 year old daugher), but she wanted to see it again. I was a little surprised, but not too much she tends to enjoy movies as much as I do. I forgot that it wasn't like the original. So, I was a little disappointed in it. The first few scenes when they are auditioning to get into the school and you are just beginning to learn about who the characters are, and what the school is like, is good. And overall, the whole movie is enjoyable. But, it is just missing the something that made it edgy before. The TV show and the original movie were on the brink of being inappropriate (at least to my 15 year old mind) and the remake is just....cleaner....or muted. Like someone has rounded all the edges. There isn't really even much cursing in it. What high school doesn't have a ton of good cuss words? And in NY? I am not saying that I need sex and drugs with my rock and roll, but it does sometimes make it a little more interesting.
I am wondering if they were trying to make it more in the line of High School Musical? Or Hannah Montana? That would be a shame. I must say I almost expected the Jonas Brothers to pop up in the back ground and do a little ditty. Aren't there enough of those kind of movies around to entertain the tweens? Is it really necessary to mess with the classics? Next they will probably want to remake
Breakfast Club, staring Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron.
